Hispanic Heritage Month Embassy Events in Washington, D.C. (2026)
Five countries declare independence on the day the month opens. Four weeks of embassy programming, most of it free.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15, and the start date is no accident. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all declared independence on September 15, 1821. Mexico follows on the 16th, Chile on the 18th, and Spain's national day lands on October 12.
In Washington, home to missions from every one of those countries, that calendar becomes four weeks of embassy and cultural-institute programming. Here is the month as we track it at Stamps DC, heaviest at the two ends: the independence cluster that opens it and the Spanish national day that closes it.
The independence cluster (September 15–18)
The five Central American republics share September 15, and their official ceremonies in Washington are mostly flag-raisings and receptions rather than public events. The weekend before, though, the Embassy of Guatemala opens its doors for DC Art All Night, with artist Jonathan Ardón painting live in the gallery on September 12. It is free, and it is the rare chance to stand inside one of these missions without an invitation.
Mexico's El Grito week gets its own guide. Chile's Fiestas Patrias on the 18th runs through the consulate and community groups; nothing public was announced at press time, and the consulate's channels are the place to watch.
Fiesta DC, the month's anchor (September 26–27)
One event covers more of the month's flags than every embassy combined. Fiesta DC fills Pennsylvania Avenue NW with a street festival on Saturday, September 26, and sends the Parade of Nations down Constitution Avenue on Sunday the 27th. Free, more than fifty years running, with delegations from across Latin America. Arrive hungry.
Through the rest of the month
The AFI Latin American Film Festival threads the whole window: Mexico's program lands on September 16 and Argentina hosts the festival's the same evening. In October the Embassy of Cuba stages , a concert inside the embassy itself, on the 2nd, and the Mexican Cultural Institute teaches a on the 8th.
